Things you miss when you click "Commit: Taxi"...

So Ty, Schnider and did a little KTO: Iron Fortress last night. We decided to ramp start out of Kunsan for our last flight of the night. Just after getting the RWR running, I see that we have MIG-23s already within lethal range. The patriot on the other side of the runway starts launching and downs them.

"Suckers... you're gonna have to do better than... WHAT THE FUCK??" As i'm laughing at the fireballs in the sky, the world starts exploding all around us. The 23's were an escort for a 4-ship of IL-28s, which got all their bombs off... and onto our runway.

(Why can i see clouds through the smoke? Trippy man...)

As i can see a crater right in front of me on the runway, i suggest that we scrub the mission. Then Ty says "You know, we could use the taxiway...". DONE!! I taxi to the end of the taxiway and get ready to deal out some payback. BUT, there're more strikes inbound...

I punch the AB so i don't end up dead in one of the explosions. Somehow, Schnidrman seems to miss our conversation about using the taxiway as the runway and is more than a little shocked when i pass him going 170kts with about 12" between our wingtips.

Killed 2 of the bombers, got to target but were jumped by more red air than i can recall. Unfortunately, the strike missed the target, i made the mistake of turning back into the mix to "help" with my guns and got shot down... but Ty and Schnidrman made it back home and somehow landed on the destroyed runway.

Anyway, ramp starts = fun. :)

+1

Nice post. I remember the IF campaign is pretty hectic from the start, because the BLUE ATO ain't really working.

Why weren't you guys scrambling to intercept?

...and before Ty jumped in, Harley and I were able to strike some armor in the same campaign. Here's Harley rifling off his last two Mavs. We both brought our A/C home on that mission! :D

Truth be told, we committed 40 minutes before take off. Obviously lots changed while the clock was running. Made for a better post anyway! :)

Steve,

I would post those pics of the clouds through the smoke shots over at BMS, not sure if they're aware of that, plus you have a couple different shots. Haven't seen anything ever posted about it. Could be a MP thing, not sure.

Cool shots, what was Schnidrman doing that he couldn't hear the divert to taxiway?? LOL, I don't wanna guess. :D

"Diddling" himself. :D

In all fairness, it was a huge departure from anything that would resemble a SOP. I only considered it as i was seeing the "red mist" as Ken would say. :)

Don't do a lot of ramp starts, so I had my hands full. When the bombs started falling I went into a sort of panic mode trying to get my jet ready for take off. Somewhere during that time I missed the call for taking off on the taxiway. I knew Steve was taking off, I just didn't expect to see him blowing by me as I pulled out of the bunker. Mission would have been a lot shorter if I had pulled out a second sooner!
