As I'm slowly going mad here living with the folks in law, I went ahead and ordered the Oculus Rift after going through this thread:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=180204

Should have it next Wednesday. I'll post my findings here, and if I don't like it, it's going back to Amazon.

Is Elite that good? I'm intrigued by it since many of you play it, but fear it's rather dull.

its one of those games you play for awhile, put it down, and then they add more stuff, so you play some more.

its also one of the top games for VR. im afraid if i get a VR, ill never leave home....

I think it's easily worth the purchase price (especially when on sale, which happens often now). I have the base game and their first DLC "Horizons", which is cool but not critical to own.

It's a total sandbox. There's no plot line to follow, no scripted missions... the fun is what you make of it. If you're focused on always owning the best possible ship, then i'm sure you'll see the game as a grind. If you're focused on melting slave traders and pirates alike, then i think you'll find it more fun! I've only been driven by cash once in the game so i could buy a better fighter. Now that i have it, i'm less concerned with money and now i'm focusing on my reputation with one of the superpowers so i can open a travel permit to our own solar system (still haven't seen earth in the game).

There are a few main "themes" that you can play in the game: bounty hunter, pirate, miner, explorer and trader. You can bounce between the themes as much or as little as you want -- it mainly depends on the type of ship you own and how you set your load-out. Some ships are more flexible than others. Spaz, for example, has bought one of the most versatile ships in the game so he can be happily damning his soul trading slaves in the empire one minute and then trying to save said soul the next by killing pirates. His recent trend in trying to pirate other humans in-game is starting to make me think he's leaning towards the dark side however.

We had some fun the other night taking Schnidr into a Hazardous Resource Extraction Site to get him some cash so he can get a good start. The only casualty was Spaz's flightstick unfortunately.

It's beautiful and soulless... just like DCS. You'll love it. :)

Thanks for the write-up, Steve!
As soon as someone here is willing to summarize your wall of text for me, I'll consider reading it ;)
